OUR CHAPTER HISTORY

The Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was born out of a shared commitment to sisterhood and support for collegiate Delta women in Ann Arbor.

In 1961, the Nu Chapter at the University of Michigan - originally a mixed chapter that included both undergraduate members and graduate sorors - faced the possibility of disbanding because it lacked a graduate advisor. In response, Soror Lavern Crump and other local graduate members stepped forward to ensure continued support for Nu Chapter and to strengthen the presence of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in the Ann Arbor community.

On October 8, 1961, a planning meeting was held to establish a graduate chapter in Ann Arbor that would provide that support. Shortly thereafter, an organizational luncheon took place on December 9, 1961, at the Rubaiyat Restaurant, where Soror Esther Lamar, joined by Sorors Lillian Benbow and Natilda Williams, shared insights and outlined the process for forming the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter.

With guidance from national leadership, bylaws were drafted and the first slate of officers was elected on September 20, 1962. Then, on November 17, 1962, Soror Frances Flippen, then Midwest Regional Director, officially chartered the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter. A meaningful installation ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn, attended by area sorors and representatives from surrounding communities, marking the realization of a long-held vision.
